Usenet netnews on GPU ===================== New users should read the "news.announce.newusers" newsgroup. This newsgroup contains basic facts and information about USENET news. Progams which can be used to read netnews: rn - the basic unix news reading program. trn - the threaded version of rn. tin - a simplified screen-oriented news reader. pine - a screen-oriented news (and mail) reader. Also available (for nostalgia buffs): readnews - a basic line-oriented news reader For more details about any one of the above, please consult the online manuals via the "man" command (e.g. type "man rn" to get more information about the "rn" program). For further assistance, just type "help me" at the 'gpu' prompt. Try using "learn" if you need to familiarize yourself with UNIX. If any newsgroups seem to be missing from the current selection, send an e-mail message to "newsmaster" to have the selection updated. The mail.* newsgroups are, in reality, mailing lists which are being fed into netnews. Doing this means being able to have subscriptions to high-quality but high-traffic mailing lists but without overwhelming an average user's incoming mailbox. It also means that the messages from the mailing list can be read with a newsreader (ie. a program which may be better suited to following different threads of discussions). If there are any other publicly-accessible mailing lists which may be of interest to a group of local users and if those mailing lists are not already available via other newsgroups, please send a note to "newsmaster" to try to arrange for a new "mail.*" group.
