<p>Tom Preston-Werner hopes to encourage its popularity by giving it an official-ish name ("Semantic Versioning") in the hopes that having an easy label will make it easier to create a 'movement':</p>

Without compliance to some sort of formal specification, version numbers are essentially useless for dependency management.
