<p>When I was younger, I decided to validate a configuration file at compile time in Perl, so that run-time code could avoid doing that. I realized I'd made a terrible mistake once I added database credentials to it: a syntax check now required an available database, because it was going to connect to validate those credentials. Oops.</p>
