By default, accounts get deleted only when the sponsor asks for them to
be removed (or at least approves the account owner's request to have
it removed). Life gets somewhat complicated if a professor leaves the
university (or dies, which sadly has happened); generally what happens
then is that some other professor is found to assume sponsorship of all of
the departed professor's accounts, including their (ex-)professor account.</p>
<p>Deceased professors (either current or retired) is an issue we have had
some but not a lot of cases of so far. Based on the current practice, it
seems likely that their accounts will last forever as inactive accounts
that have a suitable web page presence and so on.</p>
