(Or every single website would be a 'Please enable Javascript to view this page.' placeholder plus five megabytes of inscrutable minified code, but we didn't see that at the apex of the Flash era, so I don't think we will now.)

I don't run an ad-blocker, but I do have uMatrix in a default-deny set-up, and it's actually rather pleasant and incidentally keeps out the bad adverts; there are philosophical objections to any advertising at all, but I can tolerate still images in my newspaper and I can also tolerate them in my web browser. (I do occasionally have to blacklist particularly obnoxious advertisers that don't understand the 'still' part, or that think that not-even-borderline pornography is okay, but the emphasis is very much on the 'occasionally'.)

But no browser will turn off Javascript by default: they all decided in 2004, with the WHATWG coup, that 'web applications' were the future and that there's no value in having a web that can be processed without solving the halting problem. I may be slightly bitter about this.

The follow up is they start to block ads and everybody migrate to firefox.
